Antenatal care Murdoch
Antenatal care
Antenatal care covers everything you need during pregnancy. Most expecting mothers start their antenatal care around week 8 of their pregnancy.
Our antenatal care includes:
- With Dr Bellinge’s extensive background in genetics and embryogenesis, you receive the highest level of care and advice during this crucial time.
- We handle your antenatal investigations and ultrasounds with a focus on detailed analysis and personalised advice.
- Dr Bellinge performs a scan at each visit, including a 12-week early anatomy survey to reduce your costs, and a 17-week scan to ease any anxiety before the big 20-week anatomy scan, which is done by our trusted outside providers.
- You will only need outside scans for the initial 7-week dating scan, the 14-week early anatomy scan, and the 20-week scan.
“We aim to make your antenatal care as convenient and affordable as possible. By offering most of your scans in-house, we help you save on costs. Our full-time midwife is available for any questions or concerns, and you won’t be charged extra for this support.

Birth and delivery
The day you give birth is the highlight of your pregnancy journey, but also the most critical time in terms of your baby’s wellbeing. By this time, we’ll have gotten to know each other well, and you will know that I will be watching your and your baby’s wellbeing with a careful eye, to minimise any unnecessary intervention, and ensure a safe progression through labour, and subsequent delivery.
I’ll aim to follow the birth plan we will develop together, whether it’s a vaginal birth or a c-section. And if things change, as dictated by your baby’s response to labour or growth throughout your pregnancy, you will receive clear information and support to choose the safest delivery option.
Dr Rhys Bellinge is associated with St John Of God Murdoch hospital. You will deliver your baby there.
Postnatal care Murdoch
Postnatal care
Postnatal care is all about looking after you and your newborn in the days and weeks after birth. Here at our obstetric practice in Perth, we offer full-time care in the hospital, giving you confidence as you start parenthood. This helps reduce the risk of postnatal depression.
We’ll help you with breastfeeding, bonding with your baby, and organising follow-up care and support. Your postnatal journey will include excellence in physiotherapy, lactation and midwifery support, with Dr Bellinge’s oversight throughout. Physiotherapy care cannot be understated, and Dr Bellinge will recommend seeing a physio antenatally as well as in the long-term postnatally.
Fertility test Perth
Fertility investigations
If you’re planning to get pregnant but having some difficulty, we can help. Our pre-pregnancy services include fertility tests and consultations to understand any challenges you might be facing. It might be something as simple as timed intercourse, or ovulation induction, or it may need slightly more in depth treatment such as artificial insemination.
We use modern fertility investigations for both men and women to help you conceive and start a healthy pregnancy without delay.
Fertility doctor Perth
Maximising your fertility
We can help maximise your fertility by looking at health, diet, and lifestyle factors. When that doesn’t help, you are in excellent hands. As a fertility doctor, Dr Rhys Bellinge is associated with Concept Fertility Centre in Subiaco.
“It’s about maximising your fertility potential. An example is that I may recommend a laparoscopy to check for endometriosis. Another example is that I may suggest tubal patency testing to check if the fallopian tubes are open and free of blockages.”

High-risk pregnancy
If you’re over 35, carry extra weight, or have any pre-existing medical conditions, or if there are any pregnancy complications, your pregnancy might be considered high-risk.
This means you’ll have more check-ups and scans to make sure everything is going smoothly. At Concept Obstetrics and Gynaecology, you’ll see the same team, led by Dr Bellinge throughout your pregnancy, so we’re always up-to-date with your situation.
You’ll be in the care of experienced professionals who are here to manage any risks and help ensure the best outcome for you and your baby.

Pregnancy complications
Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia is a condition that can develop in the second half of pregnancy or after delivery. It involves high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and fluid retention. It causes growth restriction of the baby, and ultimately means intervention is required, for your and your baby’s safety.
It’s important to catch preeclampsia early because it can cause serious complications. We’ll monitor your blood pressure and urine tests at your regular antenatal visits to manage it. In rare cases, severe preeclampsia might require a hospital stay for closer monitoring. Treatment usually involves medication and delivering the baby and placenta, and this means an induction of labour or c-section not later than 37-38 weeks will be recommended.
Gestational hypertension
High blood pressure can be an issue during pregnancy, known as gestational hypertension. This is different from preeclampsia and eclampsia.
Gestational hypertension often starts in the second half of pregnancy. With regular check-ups as part of our antenatal care, we can catch it early and manage it well. Blood pressure usually goes back to normal after the baby is born.
In these scenarios, we may recommend induction or a C-section around 38-39 weeks to ensure the best outcomes for both mother and baby.
Gestational diabetes
If you develop diabetes during pregnancy, it’s called gestational diabetes. This happens because your body handles sugar differently during pregnancy.
The good news is, we can help you manage this with the right exercise, a healthy diet, and medication if needed. Our goal is to keep your blood sugar levels in check for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. After birth, your blood sugar usually returns to normal, but it’s a good idea to get tested later as there’s a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
Cervical insufficiency
Sometimes the cervix (the lower part of your uterus that opens into the vagina) can soften and open too soon. This is known as cervical insufficiency or an incompetent cervix.
This can be stressful, but we’re here to help. We might use medication or a surgical procedure to keep the cervix closed and organise more frequent scans to keep an eye on things. In some cases, we use a stitch to close the cervix, either here at Murdoch or via the tertiary centres of Fiona Stanley or King Edward Memorial.
